Welcome
For the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in , the German Consulate General had planned a photo exhibition with photographs by Life Magazine photographer Leonard McCombe. Unfortunately, due to the Pandemic, we could not realize this project as planned. We are therefore all the more pleased to be able to finally present this exhibition together with his son Clark McCombe, who is taking care of his father’s work.
Especially as horrible images of the war and refugees in Ukraine haunt us again, McCombe’s work leaves us with an indelible impression of the misery caused by military conflict, bound to bring a profound sense of empathy to the viewer, from a variety of perspectives.
Leonard McCombe was a photo-journalist who traveled from America to Europe in He accompanied the Allies and documented the misery and suffering of war in France, Germany, and Poland between and His photographic documentation represents a highly significant testimony of European history. The original images by Leonard McCombe were published among others in the internationally acclaimed Life Magazine. A large number of the images in the exhibit, however, will be exhibited in the public for the first time.

At the risk of ruffling the delicate feathers of idolatry I consider this work of such high quality that in my opinion it easily deserves an equal seat alongside that of Robert Capa 'the world's greatest war photographer.'
Published in by Atlantis Verlag, Menschen Erleiden Geschichte is subtitled The Face of Europe from the up to Weichsel and contains photographs by McCombe. This title has text and captioning by Bill Richardson but being that it was published in German the text escapes me. The overall tone of this book from what I can make out is one of the human costs of war regardless of whether the participants are on the side of the axis or allies.
McCombe's camera pays as much attention to the events as to the inner emotional state of the subjects. Much of what is striking about this work is McCom
