Our Desert Island Disco castaway this week is Owen Wacker, who gets bonus pointsup front for name checking Bad Manners, Wogan's Floral Dance and Nick Cave in the same email breath. From Cornish Goth to Bristol baggy, his musical education owes a lot to family and friends.
I had the benefit of an older sister growing up, who from as young as I can remember (8?) dragged me through a massive range of music for the times, from Adam & The Ants, Stiff Little Fingers, The Exploited, Two-Tone, Paul Young, New Romantics, Bowie, Yazoo, Kid Creole, etc, etc. You name it, it got played. I grew up adoring all of it, particularly at 8 years old the Ska/Two-Tone scene (Madness, The Specials, The Beat, Bad Manners) and Off The Wall era Michael Jackson; an eclecticism that's never left me. I became a Goth, which oddly enough was a big scene at our Cornish comp in Helston (home of Wogan's Floral Dance!) but with dyed black hair and dressed like Andrew Eldridge of The Sisters of Mercy I still adored Diana Ross, George Benson and Womack & Womack. I became an indie freak, then a Birthday Party/Nick Cave devotee, an REM fanatic who was bowled over by Baggy when it exploded.
