Annotation: The 14th Amendment, which extended citizenship rights to all persons born in the United States, extended the privileges and immunities of citizenship to all citizens, and prohibited the states from denying any citizen equal protection of the laws, was the first amendment to use the word “male.†But one supporter of women’s rights, an attorney named Francis Minor, whose wife, Virginia Minor, was the President of the Woman Suffrage Association of Missouri, argued that the amendment might be invoked to expand women’s rights. He wrote that the 14th Amendment meant that the “provisions of the several state constitutions that exclude women from the franchise on account of sex, are violative alike of the spirit and letter of the federal Constitution.â€
